The 29-year-old two-time Brownlow Medal runner-up recorded just one disposal in the Thursday evening practice match, resulting in a behind, before withdrawing from the match as a precautionary measure in what will be his only pre-season hitout of 2025.
The Western Bulldogs confirmed shortly after that Bontempelli has been diagnosed with "low-level calf tightness" and will be managing the 29-year-old carefully in coming days to ensure he is ready for their Round One game on March 15.
He will likely be assessed upon return to Melbourne, though the club have assured reporters his condition is not alarming.
Bontempelli's calf issue threatens to potentially further hamper a pre-season that has already been derailed by several absences from key players such as Liam Jones, Jason Johannisen, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, Adam Treloar and Bailey Dale.
The Bulldogs will open their 2025 Premiership season against North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium.
