Buffalo Sabres forward Alex Tuch scored the 30th - breaking the NHL record on Thursday, January 29th (full list of players here).
Now, Coyle extended that record after he sent home an empty-netter in the final minute of the game, bringing his season total up to 15. It's now his second career hat trick in his 14-year career.
Coyle originally got things started for the Blue Jackets as he scored on the power play to put them up 1-0 with 47 seconds left in the first period. Chicago's young star Connor Bedard would score his 22nd of the season to tie it up 1-1 with just three seconds remaining.
But Coyle would score his second of the game not long after the first period started, making it his second multi-goal game of the season. His first was earlier this month against the Calgary Flames, in which he scored twice.
The goal marked three straight seasons for Coyle with at least two or more games scoring multiple goals and 11 of his 14 seasons in the league.
After his second goal, Coyle would also pick up his 24th assist of the season on teammate Mathieu Olivier's (6) goal in the second period that put the Blue Jackets up 3-1.
Bedard would earn his 30th assist on the season when the Blackhawks cut the lead to 3-2 thanks to a Frank Nazar (7) goal, but Coyle's empty-netter in the final minute of the third put it officially out of reach.
Columbus extended their win streak to four games and improved to 26-20-7. Chicago fell to 21-25-9 and have now lost five straight.
