Serie A leaders Inter were in no mood to become the latest European giant to fall in the Arctic Circle, and only a brilliant Jostein Gundersen block prevented Lautaro Martinez from firing home just five minutes in.
But the Nerazzurri failed to maintain their early pressure, allowing their hosts a couple of half-chances before Glimt broke the deadlock in the 20th minute. Inter had no answer to an intricate move from the hosts, before a sumptuous Kasper Hogh flick sent Sondre Brunstad Fet through, and he buried his chance past Yann Sommer.
Inter’s response was almost instant, as Matteo Darmian powered a shot at the end of a cross to the back post against the upright, before Nicolo Barella wastefully fired straight at goalkeeper Nikita Haikin.
But the deserved leveller finally arrived on the 30-minute mark, when Barella’s cross from the right caused havoc in the hosts’ box before Pio Esposito turned and rifled the ball past Haikin.
The visitors also had chances to go in ahead at half-time as Darmian forced a smart stop from Haikin and Carlos Augusto flashed a shot wide – though only after Sommer needed a strong hand to bat away a fierce Patrick Berg free-kick.
The woodwork came to Glimt’s rescue for the second time less than a minute after the restart – Haikin was committed to closing down Esposito, but following a mis-kick, he prodded the ball to Martinez, and his shot trickled towards the post and out.
The home goalkeeper then spilt an Augusto free-kick, and only just recovered before Martinez could gobble up the rebound.
But Cristian Chivu’s side were again punished for not taking their early chances, and on the hour mark, Hogh had space on the edge of the area to square to Hauge, who fired an effort that had too much power for Sommer, beating the Swiss international at his near post.
Inter were suitably stunned, and the Lightning Bolts struck again just three minutes later, as Hogh turned from provider to scorer. Fet’s delicate chip through allowed Ole Didrik Blomberg to beat the offside trap and square for the centre-forward to score the easiest of tap-ins.
Inter struggled to force a way back into the game and would have fallen further behind had Sommer not thwarted Andreas Helmersen after a swift counter-attack.
Resolute defending in the final minutes closed out another famous European night for Glimt, who have now become the first Norwegian club to win three UCL matches in a row. For Inter, meanwhile, it’s a maiden defeat to Norwegian opposition.
