With Ronaldo being a five-time recipient of the individual prize, he was competing against some of the best players of all time, including his rival Lionel Messi.
This iconic group included the likes of Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, Marco van Basten, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Kevin Keegan and Franz Beckenbauer, alongside Real Madrid icon Alfredo Di Stefano and Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazario.
After voting had finished, only Messi and Ronaldo placed inside the top ten, with Ronaldo's 2008 campaign beating Messi's 2012 season with Barcelona.
Each vote cost €1, and people were allowed to vote as many times as they wanted.
Ronaldo grabbed 42 goals in all competitions for Manchester United in 2008, picking up 31 Premier League goals as he won the Golden Boot and then the Ballon D'or at the age of 23.
After that, he went on to spend nine years with Spanish giants Real Madrid, winning the Champions League four times and going on to establish himself as one of football's all-time greats.
He reached 982 career goals last week when Al Nassr beat Al Faisaly 3–1 in the Saudi Pro League.
