The home side came into the game just four points above the relegation zone, but they produced a clinical first-half display to take firm control of the contest. They took the lead with only eight minutes on the clock when Alexis Claude Maurice’s ball across the area found the unmarked Joe Scally, whose initial effort was blocked on its path to goal by Mads Pedersen before the full-back reacted first to find the net on the rebound for his first goal of the season.
Just over 10 minutes later, the visitors fell two goals behind in unfortunate circumstances when Florian Neuhaus’ ball into the area bounced up and hit Pedersen’s arm, resulting in a penalty which Kevin Diks converted to continue his 100% record from the spot in the Bundesliga.
The visitors created their first opportunity when some quick interplay gave Claude Maurice the chance to shoot on goal from inside the area, but he lost his footing somewhat as the ball sailed wide of the left post.
Anton Kade then tested Moritz Nicolas with a well-struck effort from the edge of the area, but the Monchengladbach goalkeeper was equal to his effort.
Although the game was still relatively even, Die Fohlen took a giant leap towards victory nine minutes before the interval when Haris Tabakovic got his head to a corner just before Finn Dahmen to make it 3-0, with a VAR check adjudging that there had been no foul on the goalkeeper.
Desperate to find a way back into the contest, Die Fuggerstädter created two opportunities shortly after the restart. Robin Fellhauer’s cleanly struck half-volley from just outside the area was saved by Nicolas, before the Gladbach goalkeeper reacted sharply to push Han-Noah Massengo’s cross into the area, which bounced just in front of him, away to safety.
Augsburg were dominant in the opening 15 minutes of the second half as they searched for a way back into the contest, but the hosts soon put the game beyond doubt just after the hour mark.
Franck Honorat’s cross into the area was diverted into the far corner of the net by the head of Tabaković, marking his second goal of the game.
That proved to be the last real action of note, capping off a dominant victory that lifts Gladbach two places up to 10th, while Augsburg remain very much in danger as they stay 15th, just one place and two points above the relegation zone, having failed to score in three consecutive league games for the first time since April 2021.
