Norway has seen a number of their biggest profiles retire after the Paris Olympics last year, but the reigning Olympic champions have still seemed stronger than ever before at this year's World Championships, no less thanks to the services of Lunde, who, despite her age, seems to be in the shape of her life.
Katrine Lunde has a 58% save efficiency after six matches at the World Championships, which is a new record for the 45-year-old. She was at 49% after six European Championship matches on home soil in 2010, but has never reached this level before in the 25 final championships that she has taken part in.
"They are very good, I have to admit that when we look at the numbers, but it's not something I think about even before a championship", Lunde tells VG.no.
So far in the World Cup, she has saved 59 of the 102 shots on goal during the four matches where she has guarded the goalposts for Norway in the tournament.
She reached her peak with 14 saves on 21 Brazilian shots on Sunday, which summed up to an amazing save efficiency of 67% during the 38 minutes and 39 seconds that she was in action.
Katrine Lunde also had an enormous impact on Norway, winning the women's Olympic handball tournament last year. She was named the tournament's MVP but "only" had a 44 percent save efficiency after six matches.
Lunde is the oldest player ever to play in the Norwegian national team and has won no less than 12 gold medals at final tournaments for Scandinavians. She has participated in 25 final tournament championships and played no less than 385 matches for the Norwegian national team.
