HV 71 have spent pretty much the whole season in the bottom two, but wins over the likes of Djurgarden and Vaxjo this season have proven they can be tough opponents on their day, and tonight they earned perhaps their biggest scalp by beating Skelleftea.
Coming off a 5-0 win over Leksand last time out, it looked to be another straightforward evening for the visitors when Rickard Hugg put them ahead in the first minute, but two goals in 16 seconds of play from Hugo Fransson and Justin Kloos turned the match around before the first period was done.
Needing a response in the second period, things got worse for Skelleftea when Jonathan Ang made it 3-1 with just over two minutes played, and when Mikkel Aagaard did pull a goal back in the 18th minute, Hugo Pettersson restored the two-goal cushion a matter of seconds later.
In the final three minutes of the match, Oscar Lindberg made it a one goal game, but HV 71 survived the grandstand finish to win 4-3 and end a run of four matches without a win.
It's two losses in three for Skelleftea, and that was enough for them to lose second place in the table as Rogle put their bad recent form behind them thanks to Linus Sandin scoring the only goal in the shootout as they beat Timra, who slip to eighth.
Overhauling Timra are Farjestad, who managed to get the job done in overtime and beat Orebro 3-2 away for their first win in four, while it's a first loss in four for the home side.
After 19 victories and four losses all settled after 60 minutes, Frolunda were finally taken to overtime in the SHL this season, but they still emerged victorious, beating a persistent Djurgarden 3-2.
The leaders earned themselves a win over Ingolstadt in the Champions Hockey League on Tuesday, but showed no signs of fatigue two minutes in tonight as Ivar Stenberg put them ahead, however, Jacob Josefson grabbed an equaliser 10 minutes later.
Frolunda retook the lead as what seemed to be a perfect time, as Jere Innala found the net in the final minute of the opening period, but the home side failed to kick on, and instead, the Stockholm side pulled level once more through Joseph Snively in the 15th minute of the second.
Both sides had numerous chances to win it in the third period, and though the Gothenburg side had to settle for the extra period, Djurgarden could not prevent them from earning a 20th win of the campaign, as Theodor Niederbach struck with 03:43 of overtime played.
It may only be a two-point win, but it's a fifth SHL win in a row for Frolunda who go 10 points clear, while the Iron Stoves remain in fifth place having lost three in a row.
Malmo are the new name to crack the top six following a fourth win in a row, this one coming in style - Marek Langhamer made 20 saves in a 3-0 home win over Linkoping, who are now just three points clear of the bottom two.
The Redhawks are still a long way from catching Vaxjo, who stay fourth but are now just two points behind second-placed Rogle after their 3-2 success over Lulea. Leksand stay bottom of the pile after they were beate 4-1 at home by Brynas, who sit ninth.
