Danish racing driver Kevin Magnussen crashed into the barriers on Sunday morning following a collision with another car during the Petit Le Mans race in the US. The collision forced the Dane and the rest of the crew behind one of the BMW team's two cars to retire just past the halfway point of the ten-hour race.

Magnussen crashed out of the Motul Petit Le Mans after rear-ending the No. 93 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-06 of Alex Palou just prior to the halfway mark in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season finale.

The Dane made heavy contact with Palou, who was returning to the circuit on slick tyres on a damp track, forcing Magnussen’s BMW into the air before it slammed hard into the tyre barrier.

Magnussen was able to extract himself from the wreckage by himself and was subsequently evaluated and released from the trackside medical centre, according to an IMSA spokesperson.

In a press release from the communications agency Carlos Communication, run by Kevin Magnussen’s manager, Nikolaj Karlshoj, Magnussen says:

"Naturally, this wasn't the race we had hoped for. It’s a shame, because we felt strong, and things looked promising right up until the accident."

"All the same, I am glad that safety in modern race cars is good enough to allow you to climb out of the car uninjured after an incident like that."
