Goal of the Week
From the four we had to choose from, we've opted for Eli Adams' equaliser against Sydney FC - not just for the cool finish from young Eli, but primarily because of the excellent buildup from Clayton Taylor who scythed his way through two defenders before delivering the pinpoint pass.
What the managers said
Steve Corica (Auckland FC):
"Straight after the game, I started thinking about next week. It was a pretty positive result for us in the end. We've just got to go to Adelaide now and win - simple as that.
"Once we started to get a little tighter they started to play into the pockets a little more. It's only natural that it took a lot out of us. I think we dominated the first half and probably should have scored more goals and it probably would have looked a little different. We slipped up only once and they scored, and we just can't afford to do that in the next leg. Other than that, I thought the boys played really well. It was positive from them.
"It's hard over 96 minutes to not give away any chances. It's about just trying to remain focused and concentrate. We know they are good with the ball, but we showed today we can defend well against them. We've done it in the past and we'll do it again on Friday."
Airton Andrioli (Adelaide United):
"It was a very intense match in the first half. I think the conditions played a lot into that as well. The pitch was very slippery at the start and we struggled to adapt to that. Some of our players who we can normally trust on the ball, the passes were a little bit off and the control was a little bit off.
"There were a bit of nerves and some boys struggled with the conditions. I assured them to take a bit longer on the ball, and we did the basics of football better in the second half. We played the game that we normally play in the second half.
"There are no favourites (for the second leg). It was 1-1 here, Auckland is a very good team, very experienced. They have been in these situations before. I don't believe in favourites or underdogs. It's an equal game of football. We're just going to go in with the belief and confidence we've been building."
Patrick Kisnorbo (Sydney FC):
"I think that's been our best performance since I've been here, so I'm very proud of the players. They'll be frustrated with the goal against, but I can't fault their efforts or their attitude. They were really good tonight.
"I think the players realise they can do things in a different way and we showed that tonight. That's something we have been working on since the day I have come here.
"Whether we play home or away, finals football is finals football. We doesn't matter. At the end of the day, there are two goals and there's a pitch. It doesn't matter, home or away. We've just got to concentrate on ourselves and what we do."
Mark Milligan (Newcastle Jets):
"I think it was always going to be a little bit difficult (the week off) and I think you saw it a little early on. We started at the tempo that we wanted and maintained it. We fought hard tonight under difficult circumstances: first final, away from home, they're coming off a very intense game against Melbourne Victory. We had to at times really dig deep to get a little bit of control.
"Overall, I'm definitely not disappointed, but I would have liked us to control certain areas a bit better. After we made a few adjustments at half-time, I thought we were much more comfortable in the second half.
"I'm confident from what we've seen all year. These players don't waste an opportunity to get better individually."
