There are several other players who currently ply their trade in the South African league who will take to the field for other countries at the finals in Morocco, which get under way on Sunday.
Here is a round-up of PSL players and coaches past and present.
Group B
Angola: The 39-year-old goalkeeper Hugo Marques was crowned the best in the PSL during his time at Cape Town City at the end of the 2021-22 season but surprisingly left a few games into the next campaign.
Zimbabwe: Two goalkeepers – Washington Arubi (Marumo Gallants) and Elvis Chipezeze (Magesi), fullback Divine Lunga (Mamelodi Sundowns) plus wingers Daniel Msendami (Gallants) and the uncapped Junior Zindoga from TS Galaxy. Former PSL players include defender Teenage Hadebe and veteran striker Knowledge Musona (Kaizer Chiefs) and Prince Dube, briefly on the books at SuperSport United.
Group C
Nigeria: The Super Eagles are gambling on the fitness of first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who has both ankle and hand injuries and has not played since Nigeria were eliminated from last month’s World Cup playoffs. Chippa United coach Vusimuzi Vilakazi said at the weekend he did not think Nwabali would be fit to compete at the tournament.
Tanzania: Former Sundowns and Platinum Stars coach Miguel Gamondi, who won the league title in 2007 with the Brazilians, was last month appointed coach of Tanzania with little time to prepare for the tournament.
Uganda: Denis Onyango has come out of international retirement while Richards Bay’s Salim Magoola is also back in the squad after a standoff with officials over the last two years. Former Baroka midfielder Khaled Aucho is in midfield for the Cranes. He played in the PSL in the 2016-17 season.
Group D
Benin: The Kruger United goalkeeper Marcel Dandjiniou, previously at JDR Stars, took over as first-choice goalkeeper for Benin this year and will be hoping to be the No. 1 for the Cup of Nations finals.
Botswana: Youthful striker Losika Ratshukudu has been named in Botswana’s squad despite any senior experience. He helped Cape Town’s Ubuntu to success in the Bayhill tournament earlier this year and has played previously for Botswana at junior level, but this is a first call-up to the senior squad. Their South African coach Morena Ramorebodi also included Kabelo Seakanyeng, who plays for Maghreb Fes in Morocco and was previously at Chippa. The squad also includes former Chiefs defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, who was sold this time last year to Libya’s Al Ittihad, and goalkeeper Kabelo Dambe, who was previously at Platinum Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic in two separate spells in South African football. Dambe is now at Township Rollers in Gaborone.
Group E
Equatorial Guinea: Goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga will be competing in a third successive Cup of Nations tournament, although he has played only one game. He was the regular goalkeeper at Polokwane City last season but at his new club Sekhukhune United has played only twice.
Group F
Gabon: The Panthers are coached by Thierry Mouyouma, who played at Wits University from 2003-05 and then another season at Ajax Cape Town.
Mozambique: Midfielder Kambala from Polokwane City was left out of the squad for the finals two years ago but has held his place in the team since returning to the Mambas line-up one year ago. Former SuperSport, Sundowns, Bidvest Wits and Royal AM winger Dominguez (Elias Pelembe) will become the second oldest player in Cup of Nations history if he takes to the pitch at the age of 42. Also in the squad is ex Cape Town City and Chiefs defender Edmilson, now playing club football in Iraq.
