Broos is able to select 23 players for his squad, with an additional three if SAFA will pay for them to be there, though only 23 can appear on the teamsheet on match day.
There are unlikely to be any left-field picks, and he will stick with the tried and trusted selection he has built up over the last 18 months.
GOALKEEPERS (3):
Sipho Chaine (Orlando Pirates), Ricardo Goss (Siwelele), Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns)
Williams is the undisputed number one and team captain, with Chaine an able deputy. Goss only plays in the event of an injury crises, but has proven a good squad man and is likely to be third-choice back-up.
DEFENDERS (8):
Khuliso Mudau, Aubrey Modiba, Thapelo Morena (all Mamelodi Sundowns), Khulumani Ndamane (TS Galaxy), Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Nkosinathi Sibisi (both Orlando Pirates), Samukelo Kabini (Molde FK, Norway), Siyabonga Ngezana (FCSB, Romania)
The big casualty here is versatile fullback Nyiko Mobbie, who has consistently been part of Broos' squads for five years but is now no longer in favour. He can cover right-back and left-back, and while rarely a starter, gives that assurance off the bench.
Broos is likely to go with right-backs Khuliso Mudau and Thapelo Morena, who can also play on the wing, and left-backs Aubrey Modiba and Samukelo Kabini. The latter has overtaken Fawaaz Basadien in the pecking order.
Centre-backs will most likely be Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Siyabonga Ngezana and Khulumani Ndamane, though the latter’s position is up for debate with Thabo Moloisane also in the mix. But we will get to him.
MIDFIELDERS (4):
Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas (both Mamelodi Sundowns), Thalente Mbatha (Orlando Pirates), Sphephelo Sithole (CD Tondela, Portugal)
Broos has consistently selected four central midfielders for his squads and this combination gives a mix of quality on the ball and brute strength.
Luke Le Roux could come into the mix having started to play more regularly for English Championship side Portsmouth, but is probably challenging for a place with Teboho Mokoena and Thalente Mbatha. Bathusi Aubaas and Sphephelo Sithole bring a power game.
FORWARDS (8):
Oswin Appollis, Patrick Maswanganyi, Evidence Makgopa, Sipho Mbule, Relebohile Mofokeng (all Orlando Pirates), Iqraam Rayners (Mamelodi Sundowns), Mohau Nkota (Al Ettifaq, Saudi Arabia), Lyle Foster (Burnley, England)
The most competitive area of the squad for sure, though there are some absolute certainties.
The two most questionable are Patrick Maswanganyi and Iqraam Rayners, both of who appear to have fallen down the pecking order.
Rayners has battled for game-time at Sundowns amid a recent cardiac scare, but if fit then Broos will surely take him for his speed and bustling energy that is otherwise lacking among his forwards.
Maswanganyi was once heir-apparent to Themba Zwane in the playmaker role but injury and a lack of form have set him back. You probably take him for his obvious quality, but it is by no means a certainty.
If they do not and Sipho Mbule gets injured, there is no obvious replacement.
There is a dearth of right-sided options, though Mohau Nkota would be covered in this squad by Morena.
Elias Mokwana got a goal in Saudi Arabia last week and has been playing more regularly, so could be an option, but in the place of who? Maybe Rayners.
ADDITIONAL PLAYERS (3):
Thabo Moloisane (Stellenbosch FC), Tshepang Moremi (Orlando Pirates), Themba Zwane (Mamelodi Sundowns)
Bafana have the option to take three extra players, and this could be a good mix.
Moloisane for defensive cover as he can play in the centre and right-back.
Tshepang Moremi can play on either wing and is bang in form for Orlando Pirates, while Zwane, even if not fully fit, brings experience and a calm head.
The Springboks have laid down a blueprint for having players in a squad at tournaments who might not be first choice, but have gravitas and bring influence off the pitch.
This can be a crucial aid to coaches, and Zwane might fit this bill, even if he does not play a minute in the tournament. He can be a voice of reason and bring great footballing insight and intelligence.
