In fact, only title rivals Orlando Pirates have a better record against Sundowns than Galaxy since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, with The Rockets a constant thorn in the side of coach Miguel Cardoso’s team.
Sundowns need a win to keep the heat on Orlando Pirates. It would take them six points clear at the top of the table, but with their league fixtures then completed ahead of the two-legged CAF Champions League final against AS FAR that starts in Pretoria on Sunday.
Pirates have two games remaining and a vastly superior goal difference, so would end Sundowns’ eight-year reign as domestic champions if they win at home to Durban City and away at Orbit College.
But Pirates will not even need to do that if Galaxy can stop Sundowns from getting maximum points on Tuesday, and recent history says they can.
Sundowns have won only three of their last seven games against Galaxy, and none of their last four visits to The Rockets (D2 L2).
Galaxy knocked them out of the Carling Knockout on penalties following a 2-2 draw in October 2023, followed that up with a 1-1 draw in the league, then a 1-0 success last season in the Betway Premiership, and a 2-0 victory over Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup in February this year.
The last time Sundowns won at Galaxy was a 2-1 success in January 2023.
In that time, Sundowns have a 43% win ratio against Galaxy, their second worst against any Betway Premiership opponent after Pirates (30%).
For some reason, Galaxy seem to get under the skin of Sundowns when they are not in great form themselves.
They will certainly need to do that again if they are to end their own horror run of draws and losses.
Galaxy are winless in their last 13 league games (D4 L9) since a 2-0 home win over Marumo Gallants in January. They have drawn their last three, however.
It is the last home game for interim coach Bernard Parker before he gives up the reins at the end of the season.
Galaxy are not quite out of the woods in the relegation scrap, but one more win will do it.
They are currently five points ahead of second-bottom Gallants with two rounds to play and it seems highly unlikely they will be chased down.
A draw at home to Chippa United at the weekend ensured they cannot finish bottom and in the automatic relegation place.
