The Ghana international has been sidelined since February 4, 2023, when he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during Freiburg’s Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund.
That setback proved especially cruel, as it was not the first time Kyereh had faced such an injury, having previously torn his ACL during his teenage years while still developing as a young professional.
Kyereh’s recovery journey was further complicated in 2024, when he suffered a relapse after returning to action during Freiburg’s summer pre-season. The recurrence delayed his comeback once again, forcing the attacking midfielder to undergo another extended rehabilitation programme and keeping him out of competitive action for a prolonged spell.
Now, nearly three years on from his last appearance, Kyereh has finally returned to full training with the Freiburg first team.
The 28-year-old has also been named in Freiburg’s Europa League squad and is in contention to feature in Thursday’s European fixture against Maccabi Tel Aviv, which could mark his first match since early 2023.
A return at this stage would represent a significant milestone for both player and club. Kyereh was brought to Freiburg from St. Pauli and prior to his injury was known for his intelligence between the lines, work rate and versatility across attacking positions.
His comeback also arrives at a crucial time on the international front. With the FIFA World Cup just five months away, Kyereh will be eager to rebuild momentum and put himself back in contention for a Ghana recall.
The former St. Pauli man has already earned 18 caps for the Black Stars, featuring at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and representing Ghana at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
