Final group placings are decided on head-to-head in the first instance, with the top two in each pool advancing to the quarter-finals.
Here are the permutations in each pool.
GROUP A
Standings: Pyramids 13 points (+10 goal difference), RS Berkane 7 (-1), Power Dynamos 7 (-1), Rivers United 1 (-8)
Defending champions Pyramids have already secured top spot in the pool as they host Power Dynamos of Zambia on Saturday, with the visitors desperate for a win.
Dynamos must better the result of Moroccan side RS Berkane, who welcome bottom club Rivers United of Nigeria.
Berkane and Dynamos are level on seven points, but the Moroccans lead on head-to-head after a 3-0 home win and a 2-0 away loss in Zambia.
That means a victory will be enough for Berkane to advance, whatever happens in the Dynamos match. Should they be held to a shock draw, the Zambians would have the opportunity to overtake them with a win.
GROUP B
Standings: Al Ahly 9 points (+5 goal difference), AS FAR 8 (+1), Young Africans 5 (-2), JS Kabylie 3 (-4)
Record 12-time winners Al Ahly of Egypt have already secured a quarter-final place, but have not yet secured top spot in the pool.
Once again it has been a mixed group campaign for them, but they tend to do their best work in the knockout rounds, when they become incredibly difficult to beat.
They host second-placed AS FAR of Morocco, where a draw will be enough to take top spot and be among the seeded teams in the quarter-final draw.
A draw will also be enough for AS FAR to advance, so do not expect too much attacking football in Sunday’s clash at Cairo International Stadium.
Young Africans of Tanzania must hope Al Ahly win, and then defeat Algeria’s JS Kabylie to keep their hopes alive. JS Kabylie have already been eliminated.
Young Africans and AS FAR both claimed 1-0 wins in pool play against one another, so there is no head-to-head winner and it will come down to goal difference, or possibly goals scored.
If AS FAR lose 1-0, then a Young Africans win by two goals will be enough to see them advance ahead of the Moroccans.
GROUP C
Standings: Al Hilal 8 points (+1 goal difference), MC Alger 7 (+1), Mamelodi Sundowns 6 (+1), St Eloi Lupopo 5 (-3)
All four teams in the pool still harbour hopes of a quarter-final place, though 2016 winners Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa are facing an early exit that would no doubt send shockwaves through the club and likely end the tenure of Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso.
Sundowns must win at home to Algeria’s MC Alger in Pretoria on Saturday. Their opponents are coached by former Sundowns tactician Rulani Mokwena, who enjoyed great success at the club but could only take them as far as the semi-finals in the Champions League.
A draw for MC Alger could be enough to see them advance, though if DR Congo side St Eloi Lupopo win away to leaders Al Hilal in neutral Kigali, that scenario would leave Al Hilal, MC Alger and Lupopo all on eight points and a mini-league would be created to decide who advances.
If Sundowns win, then Lupopo can also advance if they beat Al Hilal, as they would finish ahead of the Sudanese side on head-to-head.
GROUP D
Standings: Stade Malien 11 points (+4 goal difference), Esperance 6 (+0), Petro Atletico 6 (-1), Simba 2 (-3)
Stade Malien have already secured their place in the next stage as group winners and travel to Tanzania to face already eliminated Simba on Saturday in a dead rubber.
That leaves a winner-takes-all clash between Tunisian side Esperance and Petro Atletico of Angola in Tunis for the second quarter-final place from the group.
The teams drew 1-1 in Luanda in the reverse fixture and Esperance hold the advantage on goal difference, so a 0-0 or 1-1 draw would see them advance.
However, if the match finishes in a 2-2 draw or higher, then Petro will seal their place in the next stage on goals scored in the head-to-head.
The simplest route, though, is a win for either side to claim second place.
