As is tradition, the Dutch football season is opened by the Johan Cruyff Shield, the game between the reigning Eredivisie champions and KNVB Beker winners.
Eredivisie champions PSV, who hosted the match, started with three new players in the line-up - Bayer Leverkusen loanee Matej Kovar, former Valencia centre-half Yarek Gasiorowski, and former Borussia Monchengladbach hitman Alassane Plea got handed the first starts of their PSV careers.
Meanwhile, KNVB Beker winners Go Ahead Eagles saw just one summer transfer make his debut: Surinamese international Richonell Margaret, who joined from relegated side RKC Waalwijk, got the start as the right-winger, with Oliver Antman set to join Scottish side Rangers.
PSV left-back Mauro Junior first met Eagles stopper Jari De Busser before team-mate Couhaib Driouech got PSV's biggest chance of the first half, but he, too, had De Busser stopping him from scoring.
Coming in as the hopefuls in the lion's den, Go Ahead Eagles took the lead soon after Mathis Suray hit the crossbar with Go Ahead Eagles's first big chance of the first half after sloppy defending kept the hosts from impressing early on. A swift combination earned Dean James the chance to get the ball to Suray, who skillfully slotted the ball home past Bayer Leverkusen loanee Matej Kovar.
Late salvation
PSV got chances aplenty, but had trouble converting them as Ismael Saibari blasted a couple over the bar and Guus Til saw his effort expertly saved by Jari De Busser.
Relief soon hit the home crowd when Gerrit Nauber ricocheted the ball into his own net, just as Ivan Perisic's frustration boiled over after struggling in the opening 80 minutes.
PSV completed the turnaround not much later when Guus Til got Sergino Dest in a prime position to attack De Busser's goal. The right-back emphatically hit the ball home, giving PSV their first lead of the evening after 84 minutes.
PSV held onto their lead in the final minutes, earning them their first piece of silverware of the season and the 15th Johan Cruyff Shield victory in club history.
The Eredivisie champions open their league season next Saturday with a home game against Sparta Rotterdam. Go Ahead Eagles, who leave Eindhoven disappointed after failing to win a historic maiden Johan Cruyff Shield, play the Eredivisie season opener against Fortuna Sittard on Friday, August 8th.
