Having seen many of their relegation rivals pick up positive results at the weekend, Getafe knew a fast start was needed in Catalonia.
The visitors threatened an early breakthrough when Mario Martin’s close-range effort was blocked, but it was Girona who quickly stamped their authority on proceedings, as Vitor Reis saw a header smartly saved by David Soria and Thomas Lemar fired agonisingly against the bar from range.
With just one defeat from their last seven games on home soil (W3, D3), the Blanquivermells continued to dominate possession as the first half progressed. However, clear-cut chances came at a premium as Getafe remained resolute in defence, and Jose Bordalas’ men nearly took the lead before half-time, when Zaid Romero narrowly missed the target from a promising position in the box.

Grateful for that reprieve, Girona went close themselves at the start of the second period, as Alex Moreno directed a header wide from 12 yards.
That miss was punished shortly after, with Getafe breaking the deadlock in the 59th minute through Luis Vazquez, who swept a clinical finish into the roof of the net from Juan Iglesias’ inch-perfect delivery.
Determined to find a quickfire response, the hosts upped the ante with time ticking into the final 25 minutes, as Ivan Martin and Alejandro Frances spurned a couple of good opportunities.
Getafe were forced to survive further pressure in the closing stages, and Girona’s persistence finally paid dividends in the final minute of stoppage time when Reis directed a downward header beyond Soria to snatch a dramatic point at the death.
