Following Brendan Rodgers' surprise resignation came a strongly worded riposte from owner Dermot Desmond, suggesting that the 52-year-old had created a "toxic" atmosphere at the club and his recent actions were "divisive, misleading and self-serving."

It was as fractious a goodbye as it was possible to be, and left no one in any doubt as to the strength of feeling behind Rodgers' departure.
Former manager Martin O'Neill has been parachuted in as an interim caretaker manager, but when the dust has finally settled, the plain fact is that the Scottish giants, currently eight points adrift of Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts, need a new man at the helm and one who can, ultimately, bring the good times back to Celtic Park.
The question is: Who is that person going to be?
As luck would have it, Ange Postecoglou, who most certainly brought the glory days to the club during his time there, is once again out of work after the toughest of times at Nottingham Forest.
No permanent Premier League manager has had a shorter reign than the Australian did at the City Ground (39 days), and even though he apparently had his first-team squad right behind him, results hadn't been positive enough for owner Evangelos Marinakis.
Eight games, two draws, six losses, seven goals scored and 18 conceded for a win percentage of precisely 0 will, unfortunately, be the legacy that Postecoglou leaves behind in the Midlands.
Postecoglou's reputation has taken a battering
Coming on the back of an alarming slide whilst in charge of Tottenham, a Europa League triumph notwithstanding, it's fair to say that his reputation has taken a battering.
However, sometimes things just don't work out for any number of reasons, and 'Big Ange' clearly isn't a bad manager.
That's perhaps why he's quickly been installed as the fans' favourite to get the Celtic job again on a full-time basis.
Given Postecoglou's Premier League experience, he'll surely jump at another chance to make history north of the border.
During his previous stint, not only did he win the Premiership and League Cup double in his first season, but also brought home the domestic treble in his second campaign.
In the 113 games he oversaw in all competitions, 83 were victories, giving him an incredible win percentage of 77.36%.
His teams also scored a mammoth 284 goals in that time, and the football for which he became renowned is what tempted Spurs to offer him a contract in the first place.
Is Ange ready to head back to Scotland?
It isn't clear if Postecoglou is ready to throw himself back into that particular lion's den at this juncture; however, if an offer is forthcoming, he'd be hard-pressed to turn it down given that it's almost certain to be the best one he'll get when taking into account the past few months.
Other initial names in the frame are former Celtic ace and current Ferencvaros first-team manager Robbie Keane, and highly thought of Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna.
The former clearly has knowledge of the club and what it means to play there - which can be daunting for someone that's never experienced it before - though there is likely to be some reticence in employing someone whose managerial expertise extends only to the Hungarian league, Israeli Premier League and the Indian Super League.
Even if his recent record with Ferencvaros does stand up to scrutiny.
Keane or McKenna could be wildcard choices
So far this season, they've played 10 league games, winning four, drawing four and losing just two, scoring 20 goals and conceding 11. Currently in fifth place on 16 points, they are only four away from Paks in top spot.
Previously at Maccabi Tel Aviv, he took them all the way to the Europa Conference League quarter-finals before an eventual aggregate loss to the winners, Olympiacos.
Threats to himself and his family meant his stay there was brief, however.
McKenna has certainly worked wonders with the Tractor Boys, overseeing a promotion to the Premier League for the first time in more than two decades.
Notwithstanding that Ipswich went straight back down to the Championship, his record outside of the English top flight is decent enough.
Win percentages of at least 50% in the two full Championship seasons he's been with the club deserve praise, as does just 16 total losses in those games played outside of the Premier League.
Decisions, decisions...
Not to mention the inventive and incisive way his Ipswich teams have played football and which almost saw him seriously considered for the manager's job at Manchester United before Ruben Amorim was appointed.
Of the trio, Postecoglou would appear to be the most suitable candidate at this point, but if the Australian should decide he prefers a while away from the cut and thrust of football management, it opens the doors to the other two - and more - to throw their hats into the ring.
