The 34th-ranked Griekspoor had to retire from the fourth-round match against Alexander Zverev at the French Open with an abdominal injury.
The Dutchman returned to the tennis court three weeks later at the ATP 250 tournament on Mallorca, where American Ethan Quinn was his first opponent. The two met in the third round of the French Open, where Quinn forced Griekspoor to a deciding fifth set.
On Mallorca, the American youngster made Griekspoor work for his points again, forcing a twelfth game in the first set against the Dutchman after showcasing a dominant service game. Quinn won 14 of his 16 points on his first serve and conceded just five points in his first-set service games.
Griekspoor still won the first set 7-5 and led the charge in the second set with a break in the first game. After the 95th-ranked American broke Griekspoor back in the fourth game, Griekspoor bounced back with a break in Quinn's fourth service game on his sixth break point of the set.
With the chance to end it in the ninth game, Griekspoor failed to convert on two match points before cashing in on his fourth in the following game.
Griekspoor, who welcomed back coach Kristof Vliegen last week, will face Canadian Gabriel Diallo in the third round of the Mallorca Championships. Griekspoor and Diallo also met at the French Open, where the former won after four sets in the second round.
