The 2025 Italian Open is here, and the WTA field is first up with Petra Kvitova and Peyton Stearns among those in action on the opening day.

19:12 CET - In the final first-round matches of the day, Sonay Kartal has come from behind to knock out Kimberly Birrell with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win, while Marie Bouzkova has beaten Mayar Sherif 6-2, 7-5.

18:24 CET - 23-year-old American Peyton Stearns has beaten Italian wildcard Nuria Brancaccio 6-3, 6-2.

16:47 CET - In some good news for the home crowd, Italian number two Lucia Bronzetti has claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Anastasija Sevastova to move through to the second round, where she'll face Karolina Muchova.

Rebecca Sramkova is also through thanks to a 6-3, 6-3 win over McCartney Kessler.

14:51 CET - Jaqueline Cristian has crushed Alycia Parks  6-2, 6-0 in a little over an hour to move into the second round in Rome. Cristian will next face seeded Yulia Putintseva.

14:30 CET - Two-time Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova has beaten Irina Begu at 7-5, 6-1 in the opening round of the Italian Open to register her first win in almost two years. The Queen is back!

Here's hoping the result sparks a return to the top for the 35-year-old fan favourite. Next up for the Czech veteran is a meeting with Ons Jabeur.

Elsewhere, Lulu Sun has defeated Giorgia Pedone 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 to advance.

13:32 CET - The first main-draw winner of 2025 is Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who has beaten Ann Li 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 in a 140-minute battle.

12:52 CET - After a bit of a delay, Kvitova is underway in Rome!

In the qualifiers meanwhile, former world number three Maria Sakkari has made it through to the main draw with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Maja Chwalinska.
