Villarreal will face a defending UEFA Champions League (UCL) title-holder for the first time in nearly 20 years when they host unbeaten PSG, who started this round six points and 18 places above them after three league phase games.

Match News and Current Form

Villarreal’s struggles with Europe’s elite competition continued on matchday three when they suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss away to Liverpool despite being 2-0 up after 30 minutes. It was their 11th defeat from 13 UCL matches (W1, D1), with their only win in that time a 3-1 success at home to Napoli on matchday two of this edition ensuring they at least remain with a chance of advancing beyond the league phase this time around. Home form may be key in ensuring that’s the case this season, but winning just two of their six competitive home matches this season hardly hints at them being able to cause a huge upset here.

PSG have more than made up for their sloppy start to the season with a nine-game winning streak across all competitions during which they have amassed 30 goals, 14 of them in this league phase alone. The defending champions are now unbeaten in 13 games in this competition (W9, D4), leaving them one away from equalling the longest unbeaten run by any French club in European Cup/UCL history. But there’ll be no room for complacency after PSG also began last season’s league phase with three consecutive wins, only to then win one of the remaining five (D2, L2) to fall out of the top eight.

Head-to-Head History

This will be the inaugural H2H. Villarreal won three of their four European games against French sides since 2023/24 (L1), while PSG are undefeated away to Spanish opposition during Luis Enrique’s reign (W3, D1).

Betting Analysis

With Villarreal’s three league phase games producing 16 total goals and PSG’s 19, over 3.5 goals looks very likely in this clash.
