Pirates have held the upper hand in recent times, winning six of their last seven meetings against Chiefs, with the AmaKhosi winning four of the last 10.
There has not been a draw in this fixture for 17 meetings, with the last stalemate a 2-2 draw in the Telkom Knockout in 2019.

Orlando Pirates 1-2 Kaizer Chiefs
A see-saw battle that saw Chiefs lead twice and hold on for the win after Reeve Frosler had given them a first-half advantage with a fine strike. Pirates were always in the game, though and they equalised 10 minutes into the second period via Kwame Peprah. But it would be Chiefs’ day in the end as a rare goal from Erick Mathoho sealed the three points when he headed in Keagan Dolly’s corner with nine minutes left on the clock.

Orlando Pirates 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs
A derby clash that will live long in the memory, not necessarily for the 90 minutes, but rather the spectacular winning goal from Chiefs midfielder Yusuf Maart. It is one of the great strikes in Derby history as he picked up the ball in his own half, spotted Pirates goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane off his line and blasted a 60-yard shot that nestled in the back of the net. That made it four wins in a row for Chiefs to continue their recent dominance over their great rivals.

Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 Orlando Pirates
Chiefs made it five wins in a row against their bitter rivals as the unfortunate Olisa Ndah put the ball into his own net with a minute left on the clock. It had been a tight, feisty affair in which Pirates lost Innocent Maela to a red card after 60 minutes and Chiefs were fortunate not to have a man less, too. But it looked to be heading for a stalemate until Ndah’s unfortunate moment. Former Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane became the first South African tactician in the PSL era to get back-to-back wins over Pirates in the same season.
May 6, 2023 (Nedbank Cup)
Kaizer Chiefs 1-2 Orlando Pirates
Pirates pulled off an extra-time win in this Nedbank Cup semifinal to end their run of five successive defeats in the Soweto Derby as they largely dominated the game from start to finish. Kermit Erasmus had them in front early, but Chiefs clawed their way back into the contest when Maart scored with 11 minutes remaining. It was not nearly as spectacular as his goal earlier in the campaign. Penalties looked a possibility until Sandile Mthethwa, who barely featured before or since for Pirates, came up with a 114th-minute winner.
November 11, 2023 (Betway Premiership)
Kaizer Chiefs 0-1 Orlando Pirates
This was a second game in what would be a club record run of five wins in a row against Chiefs and Pirates dominated this period. It was a slender victory this time round, handed to them by the lone goal in the game from beanpole striker Evidence Makgopa. He netted after 20 minutes and coach Jose Riveiro’s Pirates were able to hold on for the win.
March 9, 2024 (Betway Premiership)
Orlando Prates 3-2 Kaizer Chiefs
A thrilling Derby clash in which Chiefs twice led through goals from Ahsley du Preez, but ended up on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller. Du Preez had them in front after just six minutes, but Monnapule Saleng equalized for The Buccaneers. Chiefs were back in front just before halftime as Du Preez got his second, but when Thabiso Lebitso equalized again for Prates just before the hour-mark, the momentum was with them. Saleng proved the match-winner as he grabbed his second, proving what an asset he was to the side before his fall from grace from the club. It remains one of the best Derby games in recent times.
February 1, 2025 (Betway Premiership)
Orlando Prates 1-0 Kaizer Chiefs
The PSL moved the Derby fixtures for the 2024/25 season into the second half of the campaign, meaning it was almost a year before the teams clashed again. It looked as the game was headed for a 0-0 draw until Pirates were awarded a penalty deep into added time at the end of the game. Njabulo Blom brought down Relebohile Mofokeng in the box and Patrick Maswanganyi’s cheeky Panenka penalty sealed the win for Pirates in the 96th minute.
May 3, 2025 (Betway Premiership)
Kaizer Chiefs 1-2 Orlando Pirates
Pirates set a new club record with a fifth successive victory in a row against Chiefs, something they had not managed previously. They had to come from behind to do it as well, after Glody Lilepo had put Chiefs in front after only two minutes, a dream start for the AmaKhosi. But Makgopa equalized from Mohau Nkota’s pass midway through the opening period, and Mofokeng proved the match-winner when he netted on 69 minutes for a league ‘Double’ for the Buccaneers.
May 10, 2025 (Nedbank Cup)
Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 Orlando Pirates
Just a week later the teams met in the final of the Nedbank Cup in Durban and Chiefs not only ended their horror run against Pirates, but also claimed their first piece of silverware in a decade. They were ahead from the penalty-spot on 10 minutes as Gaston Sirino found the back of the net, but Makgopa scored again for Pirates, forming a habit against Chiefs. That was the way it stayed until 10 minutes from the end when Maart came up with the winner for the AmaKhosi to spark wild scenes of celebration.
February 28, 2026 (Betway Premiership)
Kaizer Chiefs 0-3 Orlando Pirates
This is the latest the first league Derby has been played in a August-May season as the PSL have again kept them back in this campaign. It was a comprehensive victory for Pirates, their biggest over Chiefs since 2020. Tshepang Moremi set the tone early with a goal inside five minutes, before Oswin Appollis added a second six minutes before the break. That man Makgopa then netted again to add the cherry on top, coming off the bench to score a third. It was his fourth Derby goal and third in as many matches against Chiefs.
